Question:

Can someone please explain to me what the difference is between gay marriage and civil unions with all the perks? I hear about all these people that support civil unions but not gay marriage, and I just don't get it.

From what I understand, it's the word "marriage" that many object to. I think that the objection is largely based on religion, which just boggles the mind.

In short, many people don't mind so-called civil unions (with all of the perks) but *marriage* is simply a no-no unless it's between a man and a woman.

I think those people must have been dropped on their heads at an early age, but that's just my opinion.

Uhm, I have no idea what the difference is either. Just that it gets a lot of people riled up for no reason I can understand. Then again, a lot of my patients do that too whenever I show up. My senior doctors tell me it's something to do with "incompetent" and "geddimtheHECKouutahere" but I just shrug and smile sweetly.

You DIDN'T back Obama? Wowsers. You're the first American I've met who didn't. But hey he's working with McCain isn't he? So they both get their say in the end.

I'll be back soon mate - take care!

Sorry for being about a month behind in your posts - but I was just reading your blog after you left the comment on ours, and this post in particular caught my eye.

As a gay man - I do not support gay marriage in the sense that it is commonly talked about. This is because marriage is a religious term, but the problem stems from the fact that for some reason the government is involved in marrying people. In my mind the government shouldn't be 'marrying' anyone - gay or straight. Marriage is reserved for the church.

You (being someone who is either gay or straight) should be able to get your license and legal rights from the state via Civil Union ... and then go to what ever church you want to (and they allow you to) to get married.

That is my take on the whole thing.
